Plastic Waste to Sustainable Style-Chic Material: The Birth of Re:Ther

Crafting a Leather Alternative from Recycled Plastic

In a world grappling with the consequences of plastic pollution, a flicker of inspiration ignited my journey that would transform waste into wonder. This is the story of Re:ther — a sustainable fashion solution birthed from a desire to protect our planet and its precious inhabitants.

In my youth, I was blessed to discover the breathtaking beauty of the ocean by growing up in one of the most heavenly tropical islands in the world. Beneath the waves, I marveled at turtles, dolphins, and vibrant marine life.

Those memories stayed with me, painting vivid images of a thriving underwater world. However, a recent return to those same shores revealed a disheartening reality—a world submerged in plastic.

I was blessed to grow up in a tropical island but I returned to my home country when Covid19 broke out. South Korea, my home, grappled with an annual plastic waste output of a staggering 320,000 tons. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the crisis, like the rest of the world, leading to a surge in single-use plastic consumption. Pristine beaches had transformed into dumping grounds for plastic waste, and marine creatures battled the relentless assault of micro-plastics. The situation was dire.

Amid this environmental turmoil, one issue stood out starkly. Of the 320,000 tons of annual plastic waste in South Korea, a whopping 190,000 tons comprised agricultural plastics used in farming. The government's efforts to collect this waste were commendable, but a lack of demand for these materials resulted in wasted resources—a situation that deeply troubled me.

The question became clear: Could we give these discarded plastics a second life? Could we elevate their worth and combat the unethical practices inherent in leather production? With these questions in mind, I embarked on a journey into the world of sustainable fashion.

Discovering PE

My journey led me to polyethylene (PE), the primary material in plastic bags. Known for its flexibility, PE could be extruded into soft, pliable sheets—a perfect candidate to replace traditional leather. The concept was straightforward yet profoundly impactful. By recycling plastic bags into leather-like fabric, we could simultaneously reduce plastic waste, protect animals, and mitigate the environmental damage caused by leather production.

The Birth of Re:ther

Re:ther was conceived from a love for animals and a commitment to Earth's preservation. Its name, a fusion of "recycle" and "leather," symbolizes our mission to transform waste into ethical, eco-friendly beauty.

The journey wasn't without challenges. Establishing a closed-loop system—collecting discarded plastic bags, processing them, and transforming them into durable, stylish products—proved arduous. However, the potential to make a significant impact on carbon emissions, animal welfare, and product longevity served as a guiding light.
